I will analyze the effects of globalization on Japan’s culture, worldview, population, environment, and environment. I will consider both the direct and indirect effects of globalization on Japan’s native and foreign inhabitants. My analysis will not be restricted to any specific geographic region of Japan; I will highlight issues that have widespread implications across Japan’s myriad prefectures. By merging two datasets from 2000, Cole, Elliot, and Shimamoto measured fourteen indicators of a company’s environmental management and investigated how companies’ characteristics along with external factors influenced the effectiveness of environmental management systems. Altogether, the indicators showed a positive correlation between Cole’s, Elliot’s, and Shimamoto’s measures of globalization and environmental management. Notably, firms that undertake foreign direct investment are more likely to have more stringent standards of environmental management. The effects of globalization on Japan are apparent to me from Japanese firms’ policies on environmental management; global pressures are forcing Japanese firms to become more environmentally conscious and responsible. While I don’t particularly care what this girl thinks of me, I don’t want to come off like a total loser, either. â€Å"Look, I’m sorry,† she says. â€Å"I didn’t mean to pry. I’ve bothered you enough this morning. You’ve been so nice, helping me out and all. I’m gonna†¦Ã¢â‚¬  she trails off and I go back to working the window, popping it open a few seconds later. â€Å"I’ll see you around,† I tell her, raising the window to its fully open state. She quickly dismisses me with another small wave, and I leave to go back to my own little corner of the earth. Despite the fact that I’ve been in her unit for less than five minutes, it doesn’t escape my notice that there’s no furniture or a TV, just a mattress on the floor of her bedroom. Maybe the moving truck with her stuff hasn’t arrived yet, I think to myself. In the back of my mind, I know there isn’t more stuff coming. People like us don’t have stuff or the need for moving trucks. I’m lying in bed, thinking about the stupid question she asked me. â€Å"What do you do for fun?† How could such a simple question send me into a tailspin? That’s when I hear a whimper. It’s been a while since anyone’s lived next door, and the last guy who lived there was never home, so I’m used to quiet. The walls are thin in apartments like this, cheaply built and economically priced rental units. Much expense was spared in their construction. I’m certain we share no more than a few two-by-fours and two slabs of sheetrock as the wall. It doesn’t provide any more privacy than that found between bedrooms in the same home instead of two separate residences. I turn my head, thinking it will improve my ability to discern what I think I’m hearing. It doesn’t, but then I hear muted sobbing. That can only mean one thing – new neighbor girl is crying. I turn away, wanting the sound to stop; I don’t want to be involved. The next morning shows no signs of life from my neighbor, but that’s no surprise. The noise coming from her side of the duplex kept me up well into the night, so I’m sure she’s sleeping in. I, on the other hand, take part in my free exercise routine – running. I do this early in the morning for two reasons: one, I avoid those who may feel the need to hassle me for money. They are not early risers, as hassling is a mid-morning and post-lunch activity. Two, it gets hot as fuck here in the summer, and running in 105 degree temperatures is just stupid. I crest the hill on my street, nearly completing my three miles, and see her setting out the trash. New girl is looking around nervously, probably in hopes of going undetected since she’s barely dressed in her tiny shorts and tank top. It’s not leaving a whole hell of a lot to the imagination, and my mind wanders as I catch a glimpse at her ass. I see her throw a couple of empty boxes to the curb then turn and rush inside. I’m close enough that I can see the blackened bottoms of her feet as she scurries inside, then wonder how often she goes without shoes. A few days pass before I see her again as I return from my run. This time she’s leaving a few plastic grocery sacks out for the trash. Once again, she’s dressed in the same tank and shorts she wore on Sunday. After my cool down stretch, I make my way inside and gather my things to shower. Only then does it occur to me that I haven’t heard the water turn on in neighbor girl’s unit at any point since she moved in, not even a toilet flush. The only sound I hear from her side of the wall is the crying each night. I recall her statement about not having electricity. I’m guessing she doesn’t have the water turned on yet, either. A knot forms in my stomach. Don’t get involved. Keep things simple. Take care of yourself! I can’t help it and walk out my door, knocking on hers seconds later. It takes a moment before I realize I’m only wearing my shorts, but it’s too late. Fagin and his friends started a game, Fagin hid things in his pocket and Oliver had to try and take them without Fagin noticing. I as the reader realized that Fagin and his friends where trying to teach Oliver how to pickpocket, but in the story Oliver himself believed it was just a game. Young Oliver was being taken to court, I imagine he would have been afraid and worried of ending up in prison, he would have felt helpless. But thinking back at his terrible childhood, he may have thought that prison would have been better the going back to the workhouse. Either way, a child in that position would more then likely be afraid, I know I would be. I think Oliver is a very strong character because he has lived through a terrible childhood but still keeps fighting. After everything hes been through he still refuses to go back to the workhouse or the undertakers. I personally felt sympathy towards Oliver because I believe that no child should have gone through the kinds of things he did. I think that in the end Oliver got what he disserved, a nice family and home with parents who take good care of him. In conclusion, Olivers life had been completely turned around by the time we reached the end of the novel, he started off in a terrible home and even worse guardians. And in the end he found himself good parents and a nice home. I believe dickens wanted his readers to react with joy after reading the end, I as a reader felt happiness and relief for young Oliver. I think that reading Oliver Twist can be enjoyed as much if not more nowadays then many years ago. I also think that the novel influenced the readers and made them think about how the lifestyle was like many years ago compared to today, it certainly made me appreciate the fact that things arent the way they used to be. Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness characterized by a variety of symptoms, including loss of contact with reality, bizarre behavior, disorganized thinking and speech, decreased emotional expressiveness, and social withdrawal. This illness affects those parts of the mind that are fundamental to a person's sense of self. It changes a person's perception of reality, through hallucinations and delusions. This mental illness is diagnosed in about one person in every 100. Schizophrenia has been categorized into two specific classes and has possible causes for each class. We will also focus on the roles of the nurse and the family and the importance of medication. (Anonymous, 1996a, 1996b, Fontaine & Fletcher, 1999). A psychiatrist's classical categories of schizophrenia once included undifferentiated, catatonic, paranoid, and disorganized subtypes. A new classifying system which is widely used has replaced the former categories. This system includes two categories which are positive characteristics and negative characteristics. There are five sub-characteristics which can be described as positive and negative. These are behavioral, affective, perceptual, cognitive and social (Fontaine & Fletcher, 1999). Positive characteristics are additional behaviors which are not usually found in normal adults. These patients experience delusions, hear voices, and have inappropriate emotional responses. These clients feel as if people are harassing them and they cannot do anything about it. They experience feelings of guilt and try to punish themselves and others with aggression (Fontaine & Fletcher, 1999). Negative characteristics can be described as the lack of behaviors, or "flat effect." Symptoms include anhedonia and attention deficits. Most of these clients forget about self-care and their appearance can be a signal of negative Schizophrenia. These patients often have feelings of worthlessness and some eventually commit suicide. Negative characteristics have been found more difficult to treat (Fontaine & Fletcher, 1999). There is a wide range of causes of Schizophrenia. Research has yet to come to a conclusive overall cause of Schizophrenia. There are a number of possible causes to this disorder. One determining factor is that the disorder may be a genetic problem that runs in the family. Another factor may be an imbalance in the brain that results in the client obtaining jumbled thought processes. Other factors may include birth complications, many stresses in life, and family structure. Any of these factors and many more can have a trigger action that leads to insane behavior (Anonymous, 1996a). The role of the nurse in treating someone diagnosed with Schizophrenia has to start with a trusting relationship. The nurse must first spend time with the patient to discover the problems the patient finds the most stressful and what the patient does to alleviate his or her symptoms. The nurse can set specific goals and preferred expectations with the client that will help build a one-to-one relationship with the client and will also help the client cope with regressive behaviors. Nurses should pay specific attention to all of the clients actions, verbal and nonverbal. Furthermore the clients are very aware and sensitive to our verbal and nonverbal actions. For example, a patient that is at high risk for violence, directed at others, related to suspiciousness, may be a result of a misunderstanding in communication. Therefore, these particular clients should never be underestimated. The client's assessment is an ever-changing evaluation of how treatments are working (Anonymous, 1996b). Antipsychotic medications are used to control the symptoms of Schizophrenia. Examples of these Antipsychotic medications include phenothiazines, thioxanthenes, butyrophenones, dibenzoxazepine, dihydroindolone, and diphenylbatylperidine. These medications are the most useful in helping intervention with these clients suffering from Schizophrenia. For the drug to be most effective it has to be taken consistently as a relapse of symptoms is common when medication is discontinued. It is usually prescribed on a long term basis and has serious side effects. Because of these side effects, the patient may discontinue the use of these drugs. This is when the nurse has a major role to educate these clients about the medication and it's importance. The clients should fully understand the effects of the drug. Also the nurse and the client should freely discuss what particular effects the drug has on the client and if necessary to help negotiate a change in medication with the client. The family should also help in dispensing doses to the patient therefore the nurse needs to educate the family about the drug as well (Fontaine & Fletcher, 1999, Anonymous, (1996b).
